Work: Jamshedpur 2057: Town Within a Park, Within a City

There is power in the pioneer. The person who can see into the future and in the face of all adversity, stake a spear into the earth. That is the essence of creation of Jamshedpur. A man with great vison dreamt of a city that could lead the nation of India towards freedom and economic independence. Jamshedpur was forged in 1907 through incredible vision, conviction, courage and strength. Named after its visionary, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, Jamshedpur is the birthplace of Industry in India.  

Tata believed that steel was the symbol of fortune and modernization for India. He believed a steel company could reverse the pattern of foreign exploitation and usher wealth to India and its people. Hence, the town of Jamshedpur was founded and it has since been known as the hometown, the fireplace, of India’s Industrial Independence. A century after founding of TATA Steel and with the acquisition of Corus Group in 2007, TATA is now a global power and an international agglomeration of over 100 companies in seven business sectors.  

In 2013 - 2014 the team, led by Jessica Jamroz, was one of three international teams short listed by Tata Steel Ltd. to propose a conceptual redevelopment plan for the Jamshedpur Command Area (JCA) for the next 50 years. Our 47-person THINK team (made up of variety of specialists in the fields of: Master Planning, Placemaking, Architecture, Engineering (Civil, Environmental, Geotechnical, Structural), Landscape, Ecology, Water Asset Management, Transportation Planning, Housing Development, Cultural Heritage and Economic Feasibility) met in weekly workshops to discuss, envision and create a strategic action plan for the redevelopment of the 64 sq. km (15,800 acres) City of Steel into a sustainable city for 2 Million people.
